Global homotopy theory is a refinement of usual unstable and stable homotopy theory that takes into account simultaneous \(G\)-actions for varying compact Lie groups \(G\) from a fixed family of compact Lie groups. This theory has been extensively studied by \textit{S. Schwede} [Global homotopy theory. Cambridge University Press (2018; Zbl 1451.55001)]. In [J. Topol. 15, No. 3, 1325--1454 (2022; Zbl 1520.19003)], Schwede introduced a global version of algebraic \(K\)-theory that produces a global homotopy type for the family of finite groups from a parsummable category. The latter term stands for ``partially summable'' and is roughly speaking a symmetric monoidal category with an only partially defined monoidal operation. As one of the main results of the article under review, the author shows that the global homotopy theories of symmetric monoidal categories and parsummable categories are equivalent. Moreover, he introduces a notion of parsummable simplicial sets and shows that the nerve functor induces an equivalence between the global homotopy theories of parsummable categories and parsummable simplicial sets. In the follow-up paper [``\(G\)-global homotopy theory and algebraic \(K\)-theory'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:2012.12676}], the author uses the present results to compare various models for ultra-commutative monoids, which are the strictest global refinements of \(E_{\infty}\)-spaces: For example, he shows that symmetric monoidal categories model ultra-commutative monoids, thereby globally refining a result by \textit{M. A. Mandell} [Doc. Math. 15, 765--791 (2010; Zbl 1227.19003)].
