Let \(H^{\infty}\) be the space of bounded analytic functions in the open unit disk \(\mathbb D=\{z\in\mathbb C:\,|z|<1\}\). A sequence \((z_n)\) in \(\mathbb D\) is said to be an interpolating sequence if for every \((w_n)\in l^{\infty}\) there exists a function \(f\in H^{\infty}\) such that \(f(z_n)=w_n\) for all \(n\). A sequence \((z_n)\) is interpolating if and only if \[ \inf_j\prod_{n:n\neq j}\rho(z_n,z_j)>0, \] where \[ \rho(a,b)=\bigg|\frac{a-b}{1-\bar ab}\bigg| \] is the pseudohyperbolic distance in \(\mathbb D\). A Blaschke product \[ B(z)=\prod_{n=1}^\infty\frac{|a_n|}{a_n}\frac{a_n-z}{1-\bar a_nz}, \quad \sum_n(1-|a_n|)<\infty, \] is said to be interpolating if its zero sequence \((a_n)\) is an interpolating sequence. Let \(Z_{\mathbb D}(f)=\{z\in\mathbb D:\,f(z)=0\}\) be the zero set in \(\mathbb D\) of a function \(f\in H^\infty\). A Blaschke product \(B\) with zero sequence \((z_n)\) is a Carleson-Newman Blaschke product if \(\mu=\sum_{n=1}^\infty(1-|z_n|)\delta_{z_n}\) is a Carleson measure. In the paper under review, the authors solve the open problem whether the condition \[ \exists N\in\mathbb N, \exists c>0, \forall z\in\mathbb D: |B(z)|\geq c\inf\Big\{\rho(z,\xi)^N\,:\,\xi\in Z_{\mathbb D}(B)\Big\} \] characterizes the class of Carleson-Newman Blaschke products. Let \(\Lambda\) denote the zero sequence of an inner function \(\Theta\) in \(\mathbb D\). Then \(\Theta\) is said to satisfy the Weak Embedding Property (\(\Theta\in WEP\)) if, for every \(\epsilon>0\), there exists \(\eta>0\) such that \[ \big\{z\in\mathbb D\,:\,|\Theta(z)|<\eta\big\}\subset\bigcup_{\lambda\in\Lambda}D_\rho(\lambda,\epsilon), \] where \(D_\rho(a,\epsilon)=\{z\in\mathbb D:\,\rho(a,z)<\epsilon\}\) is the pseudohyperbolic disk of center \(a\in\mathbb D\) and radius \(\epsilon\), \(0<\epsilon<1\). An inner function \(u\) is hereditarily WEP if every inner subfactor (including \(u\) itself) of \(u\) belongs to WEP. One of the main results is that finite products of interpolating Blaschke products are the only inner functions that are hereditarily WEP. Further, it is shown that every inner function in WEP can be uniformly approximated by interpolating Blaschke products.
