Let \(G\) be a connected semisimple algebraic group of rank \(r\) over an algebraically closed field \(K\). A subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) is \(G\)-irreducible if it is contained in no proper parabolic subgroup of \(G\). By a result of \textit{A. Borel} and \textit{J. Tits} [Invent. Math. 12, 95--104 (1971; Zbl 0238.20055)] (see Lemma 2.1 of the author and \textit{D. M. Testerman} in [Q. J. Math. 55, No. 1, 47--55 (2004; Zbl 1065.20062)]) if \(H \leq G\) is \(G\)-irreducible, then \(C_{G}(H)\) is finite. The main result proved in the paper under review is (Theorem 1): If \(H \leq G\) is \(G\)-irreducible, then there is a constant \(c < 197\) such that \(|C_{G}(H)|< c^{r}\cdot |Z(G)|\). For the case where all the simple factors of \(G\) are classical, the proof shows that the constant \(c\) can be improved to 16. Furthermore, the author provides an example showing that \(c\) must be at least 4.
