Given a complex Borel measure \(\mu\) defined on the unit disc \(\mathbb D\), the authors consider the Cesàro operator \(C_\mu\) defined on the space of holomorphic functions \(f\in\mathcal H(\mathbb D)\), given by the formula \(C_\mu(f)(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty \mu_n(\sum_{k=0}^n a_k)z^n\) where \(f(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_nz^n\) and \(\mu_n=\int_{\mathbb D} w^n d\mu(w)\). They study its boundedness, compactness and when the operator becomes Hilbert-Schmidt on the Hardy space \(H^2\) and the weighted Bergman spaces \(A^2_\alpha\) for \(\alpha>-1\). This operator for positive Borel measures \(\mu\) supported on \([0,1)\) was first considered in by the same authors [Anal. Math. Phys. 12, No. 2, Paper No. 51, 29 p. (2022; Zbl 1486.30139)], and later for general Borel measures \(\mu\) supported on \([0,1)\) by the reviewer [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 529, No. 2, Article ID 127017, 26 p. (2024; Zbl 1526.30067)] and its boundedness on different spaces of holomorphic functions was already considered. The action of the operator \(C_\mu\) depends on the behaviour of the function \(F_\mu(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty \mu_nz^n\). The authors prove that \(C_\mu\) is bounded on \(A^2_\alpha\) or equivalently on \(H^2\) if and only if \(F_\mu\) satisfies that \(M_2(F'_\mu, r)=O(\frac{1}{(1-r)^{1/2}})\). It is also shown that the compactness of \(C_\mu\) on \(H^2\) is characterized by the condition \(M_2(F'_\mu, r)=o(\frac{1}{(1-r)^{1/2}})\). Finally they show that \(C_\mu\) is Hilbert-Schmidt on \(H^2\) if and only if \(F_\mu\) belongs to the Dirichlet space \(\mathcal D\), i.e. \(\sum_{n=0}^\infty |\mu_n|^2(n+1)<\infty\) and \(C_\mu\) is Hilbert-Schmidt on \(A_\alpha^2\) if and only if \(F_\mu\) satisfies \(\sum_{n=0}^\infty |\mu_n|^2(n+1)^{2+\alpha}<\infty\).
