\textit{G. Gentili} and \textit{D. C. Struppa} [Adv. Math. 216, No.~1, 279--301 (2007; Zbl 1124.30015)] showed that slice-regular functions \(f: U\to\mathbb{H}\), where \(U\) is an open subset of the quaternions \(\mathbb{H}\), have power series representations centred at real elements of \(U\). Functions \(f: U\to E\), where \(E\) is a left-quaternionic Banach space, are defined to be regular if they have a power series representation. As a consequence of the Hahn-Banach theorem, there is an analogue of Cauchy's integral theorem and a formula valid for these functions. The latter is defined via the Cauchy kernel series \(\sum_{n\geq 0} q^n s^{-n-1}\), which in general does not coincide with \((s- q)^{-1}\). Now let \(T\in B(V)\) the bilateral Banach space of right linear bounded operators on the bilateral quaternionic Banach space \(V\). A key idea is to identify the operator \(S(s, T)\) whose inverse is the \(S\)-resolvent \(\sum_{n\geq 0} T^n s^{-n-1}\). This operator gives rise to the \(S\)-spectrum of \(T\), a compact nonempty subset of \(\mathbb{H}\); and to a functional calculus \(f\mapsto f(T)\) for functions regular in a suitable neighbourhood of the \(S\)-spectrum. The calculus is multiplicative for functions whose power series representations have real coefficients.
