Let \(\mathfrak{H}\) be a Hilbert space, \(A\geq 0\) be a closed non-negative densely defined symmetric operator in \(\mathfrak{H}\). The ideal of compact operators in \(\mathfrak{H}\) is denoted by \(\mathfrak{S}_{\infty }\), and set \( \mathfrak{M}_{0}:=( \ker A^{\ast }) ^{\bot }\). Let \(\hat{A}_{F},\) \(\hat{A}_{K}\) be the Friedrichs and Krein extensions of \(A\) and let \(\hat{A} _{K}^{\prime }\) be the reduced Krein extension. The purpose of the paper is the development the following result by \textit{M. G. Kreĭn} [Mat. Sb., Nov. Ser. 20(62), 431--495 (1947; Zbl 0029.14103)]: \[ \left( I_{\mathfrak{H}}+\hat{A}_{F}\right) ^{-1}\in \mathfrak{S}_{\infty }( \mathfrak{H})\Longrightarrow \left( I_{\mathfrak{M}_{0}}+\hat{A}_{K}^{\prime }\right) ^{-1}\in \mathfrak{S}_{\infty }(\mathfrak{M}_{0}). \] Also, the author shows that the inverse implication is not true in general. Among other results, a complete negative solution is given to the following Birman problem: \[ A^{-1}\in \mathfrak{S}S_{\infty }\Longrightarrow \left( \hat{A}_{F}\right) ^{-1}\in \mathfrak{S}_{\infty }(\mathfrak{H})\text{ holds?} \]
