The authors define three classes of spaces that are located between the \(F\)-spaces and Van Douwen's \(\beta\omega\)-spaces [\textit{E. K. van Douwen}, Diss. Math. 199, 35 p. (1981; Zbl 0511.54013)]. These are obtained by requiring that certain pairs of separated countable sets have disjoint closures. In turn: \(R_1\) requires this for all pairs, \(R_2\) for pairs where one of the sets is discrete, and \(R_3\) only for pairs of discrete sets. It is quite clear from the definitions that \(F\)-spaces are~\(R_1\), that the classes of \(R_i\)-spaces increase with~\(i\) and that \(R_3\)-spaces are \(\beta\omega\)-spaces. The last implication reverses for compact spaces but not in general; the other implications do not reverse for compact spaces. As an application of these notions the authors show that the main result of \textsl{Large homogeneous compact spaces} by \textit{J. van Mill} (ed.) and \textit{G. M. Reed} (ed.) [Open problems in topology. Amsterdam etc.: North-Holland (1990; Zbl 0718.54001), Chapter~16] is valid if \(F\)-spaces are replaced by \(R_2\)-spaces.
