The authors consider a device consisting of a two-layer fluid system with flat impermeable bottom, free surface and interface, in the presence of two fixed coaxial cylinders; one being bottom-mounted and submerged in the lower fluid layer, the second one being semi-submerged in the upper fluid layer. Based on linear water wave theory, the authors describe the response of the system to a time-harmonic incident wave. The diffracted velocity potential is computed via matching conditions enforcing continuity of the pressure and velocity at the imaginary boundary of the region between the two cylinders. Hydrodynamic forces exerted on the cylinders, depending on the wave angular frequency and (internal-wave or surface-wave) mode of propagation, are evaluated and numerically computed for several values of the depth ratios and draft ratio of cylinders.
