It is proved that for a smooth fiberwise convex Hamitonian, the asymptotic Hofer distance from the identity gives a strict upper bound to the value 0 of Mather's \(\beta\) function. This means a negative answer to a question asked by \textit{K. F. Siburg} [Duke Math. J. 92, No. 2, 295--319 (1998; Zbl 1054.37506)]. (However it is proved in this paper that Siburg's question has a positive answer if the asymptotic Hofer distance is replaced be the so-called asymptotic \(\gamma\) distance.)
