New types of geometric structures, called Liouville, are introduced by the same authors in [Zesz. Nauk Uniw. Jagiell., Univ. Iagell. Ada Math. 47, 187--226 (2009)] towards a variational formulation of physical theories. The present paper goes further with the study of these structures by obtaining the constitutive set of a physical system from a generating object. For example, sufficient conditions are discussed for a family of functions to generate Lagrangian submanifolds in terms of the Hessian of this family at its critical points. Also, the notion of regular family is introduced, less restrictive than the concept of Morse family; an important result is that the set generated by a regular family is an immersed Lagrangian submanifold.
