If \(M\) is a toric variety/symplectic manifold with toric boundary \(D\), the open symplectic manifold \(M \setminus D\) is a Weinstein manifold that is Weinstein homotopic to the cotangent bundle of any Lagrangian torus orbit \(T\) in \(M \setminus D\). In the context of toric symplectic 4-folds, a collaborative work of \textit{B. Acu} et al. [Assoc. Women Math. Ser. 27, 217--243 (2021; Zbl 1502.57011)] has shown that the above assertion extends to certain partial smoothings of \(D\), see Specifically, for every vertex \(v\) of the moment map polytope \(\Delta\) of \(M\), let \(r(v)\) denote the ray parallel to the sum of the two inward normal vectors of the edges of the polytope adjacent to \(v\) and beginning at \(v\). Assume that \({v_1,\dots,v_k}\) is a collection of vertices of \(\Delta\) such that \(r(v_1),\dots,r(v_k)\) intersect at a common point inside \(\Delta\), and \(\tilde{D}\) is a partial smoothing of \(D\) at \({v_1,\dots,v_k}\). Let \(W\) be the Weinstein domain obtained by attaching \(k\) 2-handles to the unit disk cotangent bundle of \(T\) along the Legendrian conormal lifts of the curves in \(T\) that are orthogonal to the curves corresponding to the rays \(r(v_1),\dots,r(v_k)\). The result of B. Acu et al. [loc. cit.] then asserts that the complement of a neighborhood of \(\tilde{D}\) in \(M\) is a Weinstein manifold that is Weinstein homotopic to \(W\). It is evident from this discussion that \(W\) is combinatorially determined by \(k\) integer vectors \((a_1,b_1),\dots, (a_k,b_k)\). For distinct primitive vectors \((a_1,b_1),(a_1,b_2) \in \mathbb{Z}^2\), the first result of this paper demonstrates that the case \(W=W((a_1,b_1),(a_1,b_2))\) can be realized as described above. The proof is constructive. Furthermore, the construction in the work of B. Acu et al. [loc. cit.] can be extended to certain almost toric symplectic manifolds. The second result of this paper utilizes almost toric blow-ups on almost toric manifolds to establish that \(W=W((1,0),\cdots,(1,0),(0,1),\cdots,(0,1))\) can also be realized as described above in the almost toric setting.
