In this paper the authors carry out an extensive and deep analysis of modern numerical methods for solving the unsteady Navier-Stokes system. In order to solve this challenging non-linear system they consider first its linear variants Stokes and Oseen. Thus they introduce a global-in-time discrete Stokes problem that they solve with an iterative algorithm. This algorithm is based on the global pressure Schur complement of the underlying saddle point matrix. Two types of preconditioners are introduced in order to run the algorithm. The convergence of the iterative solver is accelerated by the so-called coarse grid correction. The technique introduced to solve linear problems is summarised and analysed from the point of view of implementation. The initial/boundary value problem attached to the full nonlinear Navier-Stokes system is solved by Newton linearisation. With sufficiently good initial guesses this scheme converges quadratically for moderate to large Reynolds numbers. A variety of linear and nonlinear test problems are considered. They emphasize the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methods.
