Cluster varieties as defined by Fock and Goncharov [\textit{V. V. Fock} and \textit{A. B. Goncharov}, Prog. Math. 269, 655--673 (2009; Zbl 1225.53070)] always come in pairs: \(\mathcal{A}\) and \(\mathcal{X}\) cluster varieties. The paper under review provides an interpretation of this duality in the framework of Gross-Siebert mirror symmetry [\textit{M. Gross} and \textit{B. Siebert}, Invent. Math. 229, No. 3, 1101--1202 (2022; Zbl 1502.14090)]. Given a log Calabi-Yau pair \((X,D)\), consisting of a smooth projective variety and an anticanonical reduced simple normal crossings divisor, the mirror construction of Gross and Siebert produces an explicit mirror family. One main result of the paper is that starting from an \(\mathcal{X}\) (resp.~\(\mathcal{A}\)) cluster variety with log Calabi-Yau compactification \((X,D)\) there is a modification of the mirror family of \((X,D)\) which is isomorphic to a degeneration of the dual \(\mathcal{A}\) (resp.~\(\mathcal{X}\)) cluster variety. Key for this result is the observation that log Calabi-Yau compactifications of \(\mathcal{X}\) cluster varieties can be realised as blow-ups of toric varieties [\textit{M. Gross} et al., Algebr. Geom. 2, No. 2, 137--175 (2015; Zbl 1322.14032)]. For such \((X,D)\), referred to as HDTV log Calabi-Yau pairs, the associated canonical scattering diagram, which is a combinatorial gadget used to construct the algebra of functions of the mirror family, admits a purely combinatorial description via the Higher Dimensional Tropical Vertex (HDTV) [\textit{H. Argüz} and \textit{M. Gross}, Geom. Topol. 26, No. 5, 2135--2235 (2022; Zbl 1512.14021)]. The combinatorial description of the (associated HDTV) scattering diagram allows an identification with the cluster scattering diagram of the dual \(\mathcal{A}\) cluster variety with principal coefficients which yields the earlier stated main result. As a corollary this also gives an enumerative meaning to the structure constants of the algebra of cluster theta functions in terms of punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of the compactification. Along the way, the authors also prove the Frobenius structure conjecture for all HDTV log Calabi-Yau pairs.
