This paper is concerned with constructing a \(q\)-counterpart of the truncated version of symmetric multiple zeta values (SMZVs), which satisfies the double shuffle relation. The SMZVs are also known as multiple harmonic series or Euler-Zagier sums. From the proposed \(q\)-analog of the truncated version of SMZVs, \(q\)-symmetric multiple zeta values (\(q\)SMZVs) are defined as limits. The parameter \(q\) is assumed to lie in \((0,1)\) and the \(q\)-numbers \([n]=1-q^n/1-q\) play the role of natural numbers. The \(q\)SMZVs turn out to be SMZVs when \(q\to1.\) The \(q\)SMZVs satisfy many of the same relations as SMZVs, like the reversal relation and a part of the double shuffle relation and the Ohno-type relation. The double shuffle relation of the truncated \(q\)SMZVs does not imply that of the \(q\)SMZVs, which is not the situation in the case of the classical truncated SMZVs. A counterexample by the author suggests the reason is that not all the truncated \(q\)SMZVs converge in the limiting case and that the space spanned by them that converge is not always closed under the shuffle product. Consequently, the proposed \(q\)SMZVs satisfy the double shuffle relation partially. This is not surprising as in many \(q\)-counterparts, the analogs of the classical relations hold only for specific domains of \(q\) in \((0,1)\), depending of the \(q\)-version.
