\textit{W. Gaschütz}, in the seminial paper [Arch. Math. 13, 418--426 (1962; Zbl 0109.01403)], proved that every finite soluble group \(G\) contains a characteristic conjugacy class of subgroups, called the prefrattini subgroups of \(G\), with several remarkable properties. In particular, these subgroups turned out to be an important tool for obtaining information on the normal subgroups of the group. They appear as the intersection of some maximal subgroups of the group. After the publication of Gaschütz's article, several generalizations of prefrattini subgroups have been constructed by intersecting some cleverly chosen maximal subgroups. The paper under review is a survey of Gaschütz's results and their subsequent developments.
