In this paper, the authors study the solution theory in Sobolev space for the fractional initial value problem \[ \begin{cases} {}^{C}D_x^{\alpha}u(x)=f(x,u(x)), ~~x\in [0,b], ~~ 0<\alpha\le 1\\ u(0)=u_0, \end{cases}\tag{1} \] where \({}^{C}D_x^{\alpha}u\) is the fractional derivative of Caputo type. By assuming that function \(f(t,u)\in L_p(0,b)\) for some \(p>1/\alpha,\) \(t^{\alpha}f(t,u)\) is continuous with respect to \(u\) and \(I^{\alpha}_x f(t,u)\in W_{p'}^{1}(0,b)\) for some \(p'>1,\) the existence of a solution in space \(W_{p'}^1(0,h), h\in (0,b]\) is proved. Moreover, if \(t^{\alpha}f(t,u)\) satisfies the Lipschitz condition on the variable \(u,\) then the solution is unique. Several examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results.
