\(J\)-spaces, introduced by \textit{E. Michael} [Topology Appl. 102, No. 3, 315--339 (2000; Zbl 0942.54020)], are spaces in which any closed binary cover with a compact intersection has at least one compact member. The aim of this paper is to study \(J\)-frames, the pointfree counterpart of these spaces, and a special subclass of them, the strong \(J\)-frames. The paper provides properties and characterizations of \(J\)-frames in terms of closed sublocales and relatively connected remainders of such frames in general compactifications. It is shown, in particular, that a completely regular frame is a \(J\)-frame if and only if its remainder is relatively connected in its Stone-Čech compactification.
