    The authors study the periodic problem associated with the second-order differential equation \[ u''+u=u^{p-1}(u^2+u'^2)^{\frac{2-q}{2}} f(t). \] Here are their results. Theorem 1.1 Assume that \(q < p < 1\). Let \(f \in C(R/T Z; R^+)\). Then, eq. (1.1) admits at least one positive \(T\)-periodic solution. Theorem 1.2 Assume that \(q < p\) and \(p \ge 1\). Fix \(0 < T < \pi\) and \(f \in L^1(R/TZ;R)\) with \(f (t)\geq 0\) for a.e. \(t\) and \(\int_0^T f (t)\,dt > 0\). Then, eq. (1.1) admits at least one positive \(T\)-periodic solution. Theorem 1.3 Assume that \(p\leq 0 < q\). Fix \(0 < T < \pi\) and \(f \in L^1(R/TZ;R)\) with \(f (t)\geq 0\) for a.e. \(t\) and \(\int_0^T f (t)\,dt > 0\). Then, eq. (1.1) admits at least one positive \(T\)-periodic solution. The main tools in the proofs are a global continuation theorem by Manasevich-Mawhin and a fixed point theorem of compact operators defined in conical shells of a Banach space.
