The paper is focused on the eigenvalue problem \[ y^{(4)}-(gy')'+hy=\lambda^2 y,\,\,\,x\in [0,a],\tag{1} \] subject to the boundary conditions \[ B_j(\lambda)y=0,\,\,\,j=1,\ldots,4,\tag{2} \] where \(a>0\), \(g\in C^1[0,a]\) and \(h\in C[0,a]\) are real valued functions, \(B_j(\lambda)y=y^{[p_j]}(a_j),\,\,j=1,2,3\), and \(B_4(\lambda)y=y^{[p_4]}(a_4)-i\alpha \lambda y^{[q_4]}(a_4)\). Here \(a_j=0\) for \(j=1,2\), \(a_j=a\) for \(j=3,4\), \(\alpha>0\), the numbers \(p_1,p_2\) and \(p_3,p_4,q_4\) are mutually disjoint, \(\{p_4,q_4\}=\{0,3\}\), and the above quasi-derivatives are given by \(y^{[0]}=y\); \(y^{[1]}=y'\); \(y^{[2]}=y''\); \(y^{[3]}=y^{(3)}-gy'\); \(y^{[4]}=y^{(4)}-(gy')'+hy\). The author constructs and studies the operator pencil associated to problem \((1)\),\((2)\). Then he investigates the eigenvalues for the case \(g=h=0\), and proves that problem \((1)\),\((2)\) is Birkhoff regular. The first four terms of the eigenvalue asymptotic are also derived.
