Let \(M_{n}\) denote the set of all \(n\times n\) complex matrices. The most well know generalization of the core inverse \(A^{\incircbin{\sharp}}\) of \(A\in M_{n}\) of the index less then or equal to \(1\) is the core-EP inverse \(A^{\incircbin{\dagger}}\) of \(A\in M_{n}\) of an arbitrary index \(k\). In the paper under review, authors present a generalization of the core-EP inverse of \(A\in M_{n}\) called the \(m\)-weak core inverse. In the definition, they use the \(m\)-weak group inverse which is defined as follows. For \(A\in M_{n}\) of index \(k\), the \(m\)-weak group inverse is the unique matrix \(X=A^{\incircbin{w}_m}\) that satisfies the following equations: \[ XA^{k+1}=A^{k},\text{ \quad }AX^{2}=X,\text{ \quad }\left( A^{\ast }\right) ^{k}A^{m+1}X=\left( A^{\ast }\right) ^{k}A^{m},\text{ }m\in \mathbb{N}. \] It turns out that \(A^{\incircbin{w}_m}=\left( A^{\incircbin{\dagger}}\right) ^{m+1}A^{m}\). Let \(P_{A}\) and \(A^{\ast }\) denote the orthogonal projector onto the column space of \(A\in M_{n}\) and the conjugate transpose of \(A\), respectively. For \(m\in \mathbb{N}\), the \(m\)-weak core inverse \(A^{\incircbin{\sharp}_{m}}\) of \(A\in M_{n}\) is defined as \[ A^{\incircbin{\sharp}_{m}}=A^{\incircbin{w}_{m}}P_{A^{m}}. \] The \(m\)-weak core inverse exists for every square matrix and is unique. Authors study properties of this new generalized inverse and present several of its characterizations. They give representations of the \(m\)-weak core inverse of \(A\in M_{n}\) by using the core-EP decomposition and the Hartwig-Spindelböck decomposition of \(A\). They end the paper by studying the relation of the \(m\)-weak core inverse to some other known generalized inverses (e.g., the Moore-Penrose inverse, the Drazin inverse), and present necessary and sufficient conditions under which the \(m\)-weak core inverse of \(A\in M_{n}\) coincides either with \(A\), \(A^{\ast }\), \(P_{A}\) , or \(0\).
