The authors prove that the inverse semigroup of homeomorphisms between open subsets, \(\Gamma(X)\), of a compact metrizable space \(X\), when given a suitable topology is a Polish space. The proof identifies \(\Gamma(X)\) as a (copy of a) closed subsemigroup of the inverse semigroup \(I(\mathbb{N})\) of bijections between subsets of \(\mathbb{N}\). In fact, rather than \(\mathbb{N}\) one takes the countable family \(\mathcal{C}\) of clopen subsets of \(X\) and identifies, via Stone duality, a member \(f:U\to V\) of \(\Gamma(X)\) with the isomorphism it unduces between the ideals of the Boolean algebra \(\mathcal{C}\) determined by the open sets \(U\) and \(V\).
