The study of left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Lie groups has similarities with the Riemannian case, but there are differences regarding the failure of geodesic completeness, even in the compact case. The classification of metrics on an arbitrary (non-compact) Lie group is an open problem in its generality, even in the semisimple case. However, for the lowest-dimensional simple Lie group \(\mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb{R})\) a complete classification can be indeed achieved, and its history is nicely explained in the paper. The authors present the Euler-Arnold formalism in the holomorphic setting, towards the study of the real Lie group \(\mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb{R})\) and re-obtain the known characterization of geodesic completeness. In addition, they present a detailed study of the maximal domain of definition of every single geodesic for every possible metric. They also investigate completeness and semi-completeness of the complex geodesic flow for left-invariant holomorphic metrics, and establish a full classification for the Lie group \(\mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb{R})\).
