The authors investigate the solutions \(u=(u_1,\dots,u_\ell) \in (H^1(\mathbb R^N))^\ell\) of the nonlinear Schrödinger system \[ -\Delta u_i+V_i(x)u_i=\sum_{j=1}^\ell\beta_{ij}|u_j|^p|u_i|^{p-2}u_i, \;\; i=1,\dots,\ell \] with \(V_i\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^N)\). \(\beta_{ij}\in \mathbb R\) and \(1<p<2^*/2\), where \(2^*\) is the critical Sobolev exponent. The main result establishes that, under some regularity and positivity conditions on the \(V_i\)'s, the components \(u_i\) of the solutions decay exponentially as \(|x|\to \infty\), together with a bound for the decay rate of each component. The arguments of proof rely basically on elliptic regularity and comparison principles. As a consequence of this result, the authors also obtain energy bounds for solutions having positive and non-radial sign changing components in the autonomous case (\(V_i\equiv 1\)).
