    Let \(\Omega\in L^1(S^{n-1}) \) be a homogeneous function of degree zero and let \(\Omega\) have the cancellation property \(\int_{S^{n-1}}\Omega(x')\,d\sigma(x')=0\). The author considers the \(L^2(\mathbb R^n)\) boundedness of the parametrized Marcinkiewicz integral operator \(\mu_\Omega^\rho\), defined by \[ \mu_{\Omega}^{\rho}(f)(x)=\left(\int_{0}^{\infty} \left|t^{-\rho }\int_{|y|\leq t}f(x-y)|y|^{-n+\rho}\Omega(y)\,dy \right|^2dt/t\right)^{1/2}, \] where \(\text{Re}\rho>0\). He calculates the multiplier function \(m_{\Omega,\rho}(\xi)\) satisfying \[ \|\mu_{\Omega}^{\rho}(f)\|_{2}^2=(2\pi)^{-n}\int_{\mathbb R^n}|\hat f(\xi)|^2 m_{\Omega,\rho}(\xi)d\xi . \] In case \(\rho>0\), he shows that \[ m_{\Omega,\rho}(\xi) =\int_{S^{n-1}}\int_{S^{n-1}}\Omega(y')\overline{\Omega(z')} \Bigl\{\mathcal K_\rho(\xi',y',z')-i\mathcal H_\rho\Bigl(\frac{\xi'\cdot z'} {\xi'\cdot y'}\Bigr)\Bigr\}d\sigma(y')d\sigma(z'), \] where \(\mathcal K_\rho(\xi',y',z')\) is of the form \[ \frac{1}{\rho^2}\Bigl\{ \chi_{(1,\infty)}\Bigl(\frac{|\xi'\cdot z'|}{|\xi'\cdot y'|}\Bigr) \log\frac1{|\xi'\cdot z'|} +\chi_{(1,\infty)}\Bigl(\frac{|\xi'\cdot y'|}{|\xi'\cdot z'|}\Bigr) \log\frac1{|\xi'\cdot y'|}\Bigr\} -\mathcal G_\rho\Bigl(\frac{\xi'\cdot z'}{\xi'\cdot y'}\Bigr) \] and \(\mathcal H_\rho(t), \mathcal G_\rho(t)\in L^\infty(\mathbb R)\). Here, \(\xi'=\xi/|\xi|,\,y'=y/|y|,\, z'=z/|z|\). Using this, he gives the following necessary and sufficient condition for the \(L^2\) boundedness of \(\mu_\Omega^\rho\): \(\mu_\Omega^\rho\) is \(L^2\) bounded, if and only if \[ \sup_{\xi'\in S^{n-1}}\biggl| \int_{S^{n-1}}\int_{S^{n-1}}\!\!\!\Omega(y')\overline{\Omega(z')} \chi_{(1,\infty)}\Bigl(\frac{|\xi'\cdot z'|}{|\xi'\cdot y'|}\Bigr) \log\frac1{|\xi'\cdot z'|}d\sigma(y')d\sigma(z')\biggr|<\infty. \] These two results are parallel to those in case of singular integrals with rough homogeneous kernel, given in \textit{E. M. Stein}'s book [Singular integrals and differentiability properties of functions. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press (1970; Zbl 0207.13501), pp. 40--42]. Using the above condition for \(L^2\) boundedness, he gives an example of \(\Omega \in \bigcap_{\varepsilon>0}L\log^{1/2-\varepsilon}L(S^{n-1})\) such that \(\mu_\Omega^\rho\) is not bounded on \(L^2(\mathbb R^n)\). This approach is different from that by \textit{T. Walsh} [Stud. Math. 44, 203--217 (1972; Zbl 0212.13603)].
