The paper under review provides explicit descriptions (list of extremal rays and defining inequalities) of the cone of effective divisors of the blowups of \({\mathbb P}^1 \times {\mathbb P}^2\) and \({\mathbb P}^1 \times {\mathbb P}^3\) at a set of up to six points in general position (see Sections 3, 4 and 5). The method to do this is based on three ideas: induction (blowups in less points), restriction (to subvarieties whose effective cones are known) and base locus lemmas (inequalities showing fixed divisor components of linear systems). This method is described in Section 2. Finally, in Section 6 the question of such varieties to be weak or log Fano appears, since these properties are related to the structure of the cone of divisors. The blowup of \({\mathbb P}^1 \times {\mathbb P}^2\) at a set of \(s\) points in general position is shown to be weak Fano if and only if \(s \leq 6\) (see Thm. 6.3). The blowup of \({\mathbb P}^1 \times {\mathbb P}^3\) at at a set of \(s\) points in general position is shown to be log Fano if \(s \leq 6\) (see Cor. 6.7). Finally, using certain results on the blowup of a projective space, some general bounds in order not to be the blowup of \({\mathbb P}^1 \times {\mathbb P}^n\) at \(s\) very general points a Mori dream space are also provided (see Thm. 6.10).
