A generalized lax epimorphism is a functor defined on a ring with several objects, with values in an abelian AB5 category such that the associated restriction functor is fully faithful. In the present paper the author characterizes these functors using the right cancellation property of another functor, constructed in a canonical way from the initial one (Theorem 1.7). As consequences, a characterization of functors inducing an abelian localization and also a necessary and a sufficient condition for a morphism of rings with several objects to induce an equivalence at the level of two localizations of the respective module categories (Corollary 2.3) are proved. Then the author gives new proofs for some classical results concerning of (flat) epimorphisms of unitary rings (Proposition 3.2 and Corollary 3.3) and for the main result of \textit{H. Krause}'s paper [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 203, No.~1--3, 113--118 (2005; Zbl 1078.18002)], concerning epimorphisms up to direct factors (Proposition 3.5).
