Let us consider one-dimensional (1-D), \[ U_{t}+F(U)_{x}=0,\tag{1} \] and two-dimensional (2-D) \[ U_{t}+F(U)_{x}+G(U)_{y}=0,\tag{2} \] systems. Here, $x$ and $y$ are spatial variables, $t$ is the time, $U\in R^{d}$ is a vector of unknowns, and $F$ and $G$ are the $x$- and $y$-directional fluxes. Given the cell averages of the solution, first a piecewise polynomial approximation is constructed and then the solution is evolved to the next time level by integrating (1) or (2) over a set of space-time control volumes (CVs) [\textit{M. Ben-Artzi} and \textit{J. Falcovitz}, Generalized Riemann problems in computational fluid dynamics. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2003; Zbl 1017.76001); \textit{R. J. LeVeque}, Finite volume methods for hyperbolic problems. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2002; Zbl 1010.65040); \textit{E. F. Toro}, Riemann solvers and numerical methods for fluid dynamics. A practical introduction. 3rd ed. Berlin: Springer (2009; Zbl 1227.76006)]. Namely, the authors develop new second-order low-dissipation central-upwind (LDCU) schemes for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws [\textit{F. Bianco} et al., SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 21, No. 1, 294--322 (1999; Zbl 0940.65093)]). Like all of the Godunov-type schemes [\textit{B. van Leer}, J. Comput. Phys. 32, 101--136 (1979; Zbl 1364.65223)], the proposed LDCU schemes are developed in three steps: reconstruction, evolution, and projection where major novelty of their approach is in the projection step, which is based on a subcell resolution and designed to sharper approximate contact waves while ensuring a non-oscillatory property of the projected solution.
