Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(\nu(G)\) the number of conjugacy classes of non-normal subgroups of \(G\). Groups \(G\) for which \(\nu(G)=0\), \(1\), \(2\) and \(3\) have been classified by Dedekind, \textit{O. Yu. Shmidt} (cases 1 and 2) [Rec. Math. Moscou 33, 161-172 (1926; JFM 52.0112.02), Sbornik Pamjati D. A. Gravé 291-309 (1940; Zbl 0024.01801)] and \textit{V. M. Sitnikov} and \textit{A. D. Ustjužaninov} [Mat. Zap., Sverdl. 6, No. 1, 94-102 (1967; Zbl 0311.20009)]. \textit{R. La Haye} and \textit{A. Rhemtulla} have shown that if \(G\) is a finite \(p\)-group and \(\nu(G)>1\) then \(\nu(G)\geq p\) [J. Algebra 214, No. 1, 41-63 (1999; Zbl 0921.20042)]. In this paper the authors classify, for \(p\) odd, the finite \(p\)-groups with precisely \(p\) conjugacy classes of non-normal subgroups. (Note the case \(p=2\) follows from Shmidt's classification.) In particular, they show that, for odd prime, \(G\) is a finite \(p\)-group with \(\nu(G)=p\) if and only if \(G\) has the following presentation with \(n\geq 4\): \[ \langle a,b\mid a^{p^{n-2}}=b^{p^2}=1,\;a^b=a^{1+p^{n-3}}\rangle. \] The proof makes use of the fact that there is only one family of finite \(p\)-groups with \(\nu(G)=1\), as well as a couple of previous results of the authors.
