The author continues work of \textit{E. Chetcuti} and \textit{J. Hamhalter} [Q. J. Math. 57, 479--493 (2008; Zbl 1155.46027) and Q. J. Math. 60, No.~1, 45--51 (2009; Zbl 1170.46040)] about noncommutative measure theory. Here the latter is understood as the study of completely additive operators on von Neumann algebras with values in a locally convex space. Two main topics are considered where a noncommutative analogue of a statement from ordinary measure theory holds precisely if the von Neumann algebra is finite, hence providing measure theoretic characterizations of finiteness. The first such topic is about the characterization of absolute continuity by null projections. The second topic is about the possibility to transfer the Vitali-Hahn-Saks property for a bounded set \(K\) in the predual to the set \(|K|\) of variations. The latter result strengthens earlier work in [\textit{K. Saito}, Tohoku Math. J., II. Ser. 19, 324--331 (1967; Zbl 0161.11001)] and \textit{E. Chetcuti} and \textit{J. Hamhalter} [op. cit.].
