The paper under review focuses on detecting when a group has the structure of a free product. The far-reaching work of \textit{F. Dahmani} et al. [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 1156 (2016; Zbl 1396.20041)] and the recent article of \textit{M. Clay} et al. [Compos. Math. 157, No. 8, 1807--1852 (2021; Zbl 1510.57017)] provide geometric approaches to the study of the normal closure of a subgroup (or a collection of subgroups) in an ambient group \(G\). Their work gives conditions under which the normal closure in \(G\) is a free product. In the paper under review, the authors unify the previous results and simplify and significantly shorten the proof of the main theorem of Dahmani et al. [loc. cit.].
