The Smirnov compactification \(u_dX\) of a metric space \((X,d)\) is the compactification associated with the family of all bounded uniformly continuous real-valued functions on \(X\). It can be characterized as that compactification \(\alpha X\) in which whenever \(A,B\subseteq X\) are closed, then cl\(_{\alpha X}(A)\cap \text{cl}_{\alpha X}(B)=\emptyset\) if and only if \(d(A,B)>0\). The Smirnov compactification depends on the metric \(d\). A metric space \((X,d)\) is proper if the closure of every open ball in \(X\) is compact and \((X,d)\) is uniformly locally connected if for each \(\varepsilon>0\), there is \(\delta>0\) such that whenever \(d(x,y)<\delta\) there is a connected subset of \(X\) of diameter less than \(\varepsilon\) which contains both \(x\) and \(y\). The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between uniform local connectedness and the dimension of the Smirnov remainder. In Section 3, it is shown that if \((X,d)\) is a proper connected metric space for which \(u_dX\setminus X\) is connected, then there is a proper metric \(\rho\) on \(\mathbb R^+\) which induces the Euclidean topology and such that \(u_\rho \mathbb R^+\setminus \mathbb R^+\) is homeomorphic to \(u_dX\setminus X\). In Section 4 it is shown that if \(X\) is a non-compact connected topological 1-manifold with a proper metric \(d\) and if \((X,d)\) is uniformly locally connected, then the remainder \(u_dX\setminus X\) has (large inductive, small inductive, covering) dimension 1. In Section 5, high dimensional manifolds are considered and in the final section, the Smirnov compactification of certain infinite covering spaces is studied.
