\textit{K. Th. Vahlen} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 115, 221--233 (1895; JFM 26.0230.01)] proved that for every real number \(\alpha\) and every pair of its consecutive convergents, at least one of these two convergents \(\frac{p}{q}\) satisfies inequality \[ \biggl|\alpha-\frac{p}{q}\biggr|<\frac{1}{2q^2} \] The multiplicative constant \(2\) was improved several times and the best known value \[ 2+\frac{4(q-1)}{q(q^2+q+6)}=2+\frac{4}{q^2}-\frac{8}{q^3}-\frac{16}{q^4}+O\biggl(\frac{1}{q^5}\biggr) \] was found by \textit{J. Hančl} and \textit{S. Bahnerová} [J. Ramanujan Math. Soc. 36, No. 2, 109--121 (2021; Zbl 1483.11141)]. In the present paper the author improves this value to \[ f(q)=2+\frac{4(q^3-1)}{q(q^4+2q^3+5q^2+q+30)}=2+\frac{4}{q^2}-\frac{8}{q^3}-\frac{4}{q^4}+O\biggl(\frac{1}{q^5}\biggr) \] Thus the best know inequality (satisfied by at least one of each two consecutive convergents) is now \[ \biggl|\alpha-\frac{p}{q}\biggr|<\frac{1}{f(q)q^2} \] for \(f\) defined as above.
