Let \(K\) be a field of degree \(d\) over \({\mathbb Q}\), and let \(\alpha\) be a unit which is not a root of unity. Under some special splitting conditions of a prime ideal \(\mathcal P\) of \({\mathcal O}_K\) which lies above a rational odd prime \(p\) and some special form of \({\mathcal P} {\mathcal O}_K(\alpha)\), the authors obtain the bound \(h(\alpha) \geq c\), where \(h\) is the Weil height and \(c>0\) depends on \(p\) and \(d=[K : {\mathbb Q}]\). A similar result is obtained for the prime \(p=2\), but then the bound is not for Weil's height but for Mahler's measure, namely, \(M(\alpha) \geq c(K)>1\).
