The authors provide a twistor construction of Hopf real hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic space. Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex projective space are well-understood and can be locally characterized as tubes over complex submanifolds. However, this characterization does not apply to all Hopf real hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic space. The main objective of the paper is to present a unified method for constructing Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic space. This construction involves starting from a horizontal submanifold within one of the three twistor spaces associated with the indefinite complex 2-plane Grassmannian, in the context of the natural para-quaternionic Kähler structure. The authors also identify these twistor spaces with the sets of circles found in totally geodesic complex hyperbolic lines within the complex hyperbolic space. As an application, the authors describe all classical Hopf examples and notably resolve a longstanding problem regarding the existence of Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic space, distinct from the horosphere, such that the associated principal curvature is 2.
