This paper studies geodesics in the random metric space called the Brownian map, which appears as the scaling limit of several classes of discrete planar maps. The author proves that a typical point of the Brownian map is connected by a unique geodesic to the distinguished point called the root. He also gives an explicit description of the set of those points that are connected to the root by at least two distinct geodesics. In particular, he obtains that this set is dense in the Brownian map and is homeomorpic to a real tree. Moreover it is shown that countably many points are connected to the root by at most three distinct geodesics.
