In solid state physics, the most widely used techniques to calculate the electronic levels in nanostructures are the effective mass approximation and its extension the multiband \(k\cdot p\) method, resulting in the study of the Schrödinger equations. The authors discuss the multiscale analysis of the Schrödinger equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients, which is related to the case of heterostructure. They obtain the determination of the convergence rate for the approximate solutions, the definition of boundary layer solutions, and higher-order correctors. As a result, they present a multiscale finite element method and some numerical results, and give a reasonable interpretation why the effective mass approximation is very accurate for calculating the band structures in the semiconductor in the vicinity of a \(\Gamma \) point, from the viewpoint of mathematics.
