A system of single-mode rate equations for two coupled semiconductor lasers, which takes into account a delay time \(\tau\) of light propagation in the optoelectronic coupling circuit, is considered. Spiking behavior in this system is studied by means of a reduction of the original set of equations with delayed argument to finite dimensional maps. The reduction allows classifying different time periodic solutions corresponding to fixed-points of these maps and also establishing the relations between spike energies and inter-spike time intervals. In particular, nearly in-phase and nearly anti-phase oscillations of the fields of two lasers with the period larger than the delay time \(\tau\) as well as phase shift oscillations with the period smaller than \(\tau\) are described. It is demonstrated that the existence of delay induces multistability of various spiking states in the infinite dimensional phase space, a method to implement switching between these states is proposed.
