\textit{Y. Barnea, N. Gavioli, A. Jaikin-Zapirain, V. Monti} and \textit{C. M. Scoppola} have proved [in J. Algebra 321, No. 2, 429-449 (2009; Zbl 1206.20030)] among others that an infinite pro-\(p\) group \(G\) is just infinite if and only if, for every open subgroup \(H\) of \(G\), there are only finitely many open normal subgroups of \(G\) not contained in \(H\). An infinite group is said to be just infinite if every non-trivial normal subgroup has finite index. In the paper under review this result is extended to (infinite) profinite groups. This allows the author to give characterizations of just infinite, and hereditarily just infinite groups. A group is said to be hereditarily just infinite if every open subgroup of it, including the group itself, is just infinite.
