In this article the authors study primitive axial algebras of Monster type, which are among the non-associative algebras. They are of particular interest to group theorists because they turn out to have strong connections not only, but also to finite simple groups. An example that is often used for motivation is the Griess algebra, with the Monster group (the largest sporadic simple group) as its automorphism group. As a contribution to the structure theory of this class of algebras, this article completes the classification of symmetric axial algebras of Monster type. This is done by investigating the Hightower algebra, more specifically its quotients and also the quotients of its characteristic 5 cover. While this would be sufficient for the classification results (based on earlier work), the authors take a broader view and define covers of the Highwater algebra in all characteristics, uncovering a new fusion law and giving more insight into the behaviour of the Highwater algebra. This article contains many interesting results, and it is worth noting that the introduction gives a very nice motivation for and overview over this particular area of mathematics.
