The isoperimetric problem asks for the regions that minimize the perimeter among compact sets of a given fixed volume. The solutions are called isoperimetric regions and their boundaries isoperimetric hypersurfaces. This paper proves a conjecture on isoperimetric regions in the real projective spaces \(\mathbb{P}^{n+1}(\mathbb{R})\) due to \textit{M. Berger} [Jahresber. Dtsch. Math.-Ver. 100, No. 2, 45--208 (1998; Zbl 0928.53001)], \textit{Yu. D. Burago} and \textit{V. A. Zalgaller} [Geometric inequalities. Transl. from the Russian by A. B. Sossinsky. Transl. from the Russian by A. B. Sossinsky. Berlin etc.: Springer-Verlag (1988; Zbl 0633.53002)], and \textit{A. Ros} [Math. Res. Lett. 6, No. 5--6, 487--493 (1999; Zbl 0951.53044)]: Theorem. The isoperimetric regions in the real projective space \(\mathbb{P}^{n+1}(\mathbb{R})\) are tubular neighbourhoods of projective subspaces \(\mathbb{P}^{k}(\mathbb{R})\subset \mathbb{P}^{n+1}(\mathbb{R})\). The author obtains this result as a consequence of the study of compact two-sided volume preserving stable hypersurfaces in \(\mathbb{P}^{n+1}(\mathbb{R})\): he proves that these are either geodesic spheres, a quotient of a Clifford hypersurface in \(\mathbb{S}^{n+1}\) or a two-fold covering of the projective space \(\mathbb{P}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\).
