The authors consider a Lorentz-like three-dimensional polynomial vector field given by \[ \dot x= \sigma(-x+ry+ryz), \qquad \dot y=-xz+x-y, \qquad \dot z=-2z+xy. \] The paper presents three main results. In the first the authors prove that the system has three singularities (one of them being the origin) and study their associated eigenvalues. In the second they prove that the origin passes through a Hopf bifurcation and thus the system has at least one limit cycle for certain values of the parameters. In the third they use the Fishing principle to prove the existence of a homoclinic orbit of the origin for certain values of the parameters. Moreover, the authors present numerical evidences of heteroclinic orbits for certain values of the parameters.
