The authors study the Brauer group for the punctual Hilbert scheme \(X^{(2)}=\operatorname{Hilb}^2(X)\) for \(d=2\) points on smooth surfaces \(X\) over algebraically closed ground fields \(k\) of characteristic \(p\neq 2\). They relate it with various spectral sequences to the Brauer groups of the symmetric product \(X^{[2]}=\operatorname{Sym}^2(X)=X^2/S_2\) and the quotient stack \([X^2/S_2]\) formed with the action that permutes the factors. Fix some prime \(\ell>0\) different from the characteristic \(p>0\). The main results are: The Hilbert-Chow morphism induces a bijection \(\operatorname{Br}(X^{(2)})_{l^*}\to \operatorname{Br}(X^{[2]})_{l^*}\) on the \(\ell\)-primary parts of the Brauer groups. For \(\ell\neq 2\), a similar equality holds for the cohomological Brauer groups of the Hilbert scheme \(X^{(2)}\) and the quotient stack \([X^2/S_2]\), and furthermore one has \(\operatorname{Br}'(X^2/S_2])_{l^*} = \operatorname{Br}'(X^2)_{l^*}^{S_2}\). For the remaining case \(\ell=2\) the authors relate the groups in question by certain exact sequences. There are also results for certain open parts of punctual Hilbert schemes of \(d\geq 2\) points.
