The classical Bernstein and Markov inequalities says that \[ \|\sqrt{1-x^2}\,p'(x)\| \leq n\|p(x)\|~\text{and}~\|p'(x)\| \leq n^2\|p(x)\| \] for any univariate polynomial \(p\) of degree \(n\), respectively, where \(\|\cdot\|\) is the supremum norm on \([-1,1]\). Similar inequalities hold for multivariate polynomials in \(d\) variables of degree at most \(n\) for the supremum norm on the \(d\)-dimensional unit ball \(B^d(0,1)\) and the weight function \(\sqrt{1-|\boldsymbol{x}|^2}\). In both cases, the significant reduction from \(n^2\) (Markov) to \(n\) (Bernstein) follows from inserting the weight \(\sqrt{1-x^2}\) and \(\sqrt{1-|\boldsymbol{x}|^2}\) measuring the Euclidean distance to the boundary for the domains \([-1,1]\) and \(B^d(0,1)\), respectively. In this paper, the author establishes that the square root of the Euclidean distance to the boundary is the universal measure suitable for \(L^p\) Bernstein type inequalities on general star like Lip \(\alpha\) domains. This is proved for derivatives of any order, for \(0<p<\infty\) and generalized Jacobi weights. Moreover, a converse result shows that the ``square root of the Euclidean distance to the boundary'' is in some sense the best possible measure. Finally, some cuspidal Lip \(\alpha\) domains are considered.
