Let \(E\) be a topological vector lattice. A \((\sigma)\) nest in \(E\) is any \((\sigma)\) filter base in \(E\) consisting of order intervals. A topological vector lattice \(E\) is \((\sigma)\) nestedly complete if every Cauchy (countable) nest in \(E\) is convergent. The author gives some characterizations of \((\sigma)\) nestedly complete vector lattices. It is shown that if \(E\) is metrizable and nestedly complete, then so is each of its quotients \(E/I\), where \(I\) is a closed order ideal in \(E\). It is shown that the nested completeness is not a three-space property. The author also shows that nested completeness and the related notion of nested density arise when extending positive linear operators. Finally, the nested and other completeness type properties of vector lattices \(C(S)\) are studied.
