Let \(\Omega\) be a domain in \(\overline{\mathbb C}\), \(\infty \in \Omega\), \(f\) a function analytic in \(\Omega\). Given a polynomial \(Q(z) \not \equiv 0\), denote by \(P(z)\) the polynomial part of the Laurent expansion of \(Q(z) f(z)\); then the rational function \(P(z)/Q(z)\) is called the Padé type approximant (PTA) of \(f\) at \(\infty\) with preassigned poles at the zeros of \(Q\). The authors study the problem of the existence of a sequence of denominators \(\{ Q_n(z) \}\) such that for every function \(f\) analytic in \(\Omega\) the corresponding sequence of PTA converge to \(f\) uniformly on compact subsets of \(\Omega\). If \(\Omega\) is a regular domain (with respect to the Dirichlet problem), the solution is known; the admissible sequences \(\{ Q_n(z) \}\) can be described in terms of logarithmic capacity of \(K=\overline{\mathbb C} \setminus \Omega\) or the equilibrium measure of \(K\). The authors state four conditions characterizing such sequences. Nevertheless, in the irregular case the problem is more complicated. The conditions mentioned before are no longer equivalent. The main contribution of the paper consists in the established hierarchy of these conditions in the irregular case. Furthermore, the authors conjecture that for the existence of polynomials \(\{ Q_n(z) \}\) providing convergence of PTA for every \(f\) analytic in \(\Omega\) it is necessary and sufficient that \(\Omega\) is regular.
