Soliton solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CLG) equation are explored with the aid of symbolic computation and Hirota method. Both bright and dark soliton solutions for CLG equation are obtained and their relevant properties and features are discussed. A new Bäcklund transformation is derived based on the bilinear forms of the CLG equation. This transformation not only allows to obtain the analytic solution, but also to derive the inverse scattering transform scheme for solving the initial-value problem. It is shown that the soliton width and central frequency could be adjusted, and the soliton can be compressed or amplified through changing the linear and nonlinear dispersion effects. Moreover, the directions of the movement for the soliton central frequency can be changed through adjusting the values of the associated wave number. Some special soliton solutions are graphically analyzed for better understanding their properties. It is suggested that some of the results obtained in this paper could be verified by the future experiments.
