The author applies lattice theory to classify complex projective plane curves of degree \(6\) with only simple singularities. There are three types of possible equivalence relations among simple sextics: (1) equisingular relation, (2) configuration type relation, (3) embedding type relation, where (1) implies (3) and (3) implies (2), although the converses do not necessarily hold. The Author introduces another equivalence relation that he calls lattice-type relation, by means of the structure of the Neron-Severi lattices of the \(K3\) surfaces obtained as the double covers of \(\mathbb{P}^2\) branching along the simple sextics. This relation is coarser than relation (1) above but it is finer than (2), so it can play the same role as the relation (3) and, as it is purely algebraic, it is computationally easier to deal with. The Author also defines a notion of \(\mathbb{Z}\)-splitting curves and he investigates the lattice types of simple sextics using this notion. Then he introduces the notion of lattice Zariski couples, and more generally, the notion of lattice Zariski \(k\)-tuples in the same way as the classical notion of Zariski pairs. Furthermore, he defines the notion of lattice types of \(Z\)-splitting curves. From this he gets a classification and many examples of simple sextics. Most of the results are proved computationally with the assistance of a computer.
