The main theorem of this paper gives the general solution of the following composite functional equation \[ f(f(x)-f(y))=f(x+y)+f(x-y)-f(x)-f(y), \] where \(f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\), and the range of \(f\) fulfills some additional conditions. The second part contains the proof of the main theorem. In the third part a new proof of the theorem of \textit{A. Chaljub-Simon} and \textit{P. Volkmann} [Aequationes Math. 47, No. 1, 60--68 (1994; Zbl 0798.39007)] on the solution of the functional equation \[ |f(x)-f(y)|=\min\{f(x+y),f(x-y)\} \] is given. In the last section some corollaries of the main result are derived.
