From the paper: ``It has been known for a long time that for \(2\leq k\in\mathbb N\), the classes \(\mathfrak N^k\) of finite soluble groups with nilpotent length at most \(k\) and the classes \(\mathfrak N^{k-1}\mathfrak A\) of finite groups with commutator subgroup soluble of nilpotent length at most \(k-1\) are invariant under projectivities \dots. Recently, as an application of their results on the subgroup index problem, \textit{M. Costantini} and \textit{G. Zacher} [``On the subgroup index problem in finite groups'', to appear in Isr. J. Math.] gave a lattice-theoretic characterization of the iterated Fitting subgroups \(F_k(G)\) of a finite group \(G\). This of course yields a lattice-theoretic characterization of the classes \(\mathfrak N^k\); in fact \dots it is clear that it is equivalent to characterize \(F_k(G)\) or \(\mathfrak N^k\). [We] use two well-known theorems of Gaschütz to obtain a lattice-theoretic characterization of the classes \(\mathfrak N^{k-1}\mathfrak A\) and, more or less with the same proof, a new characterization of the classes \(\mathfrak N^k\) (\(k\geq 2\)).'' The characterizations in question are built inductively, starting from the base case of \(k=2\). The base case specifies certain relationships between lattice-theoretic extensions of the Fitting subgroup and of various centralizers.
