Given a measurable function \(f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) which is periodic of period \(1 \), for any \(\alpha \in\mathbb{R}\) and for any positive integer \(n\) let \(M_n^{\alpha} f(x) :=\frac{1}{n+1} \sum_{k=0}^n f(x+ k\alpha)\). Denote by \(\Gamma_f\) the set of \(\alpha\in (0,1)\) for which \(M_n^{\alpha} f(x)\) converges for almost every \(x\in\mathbb{R}\). The set \(\Gamma_f\) is called the rotation set of \(f\). In his paper [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 16, No. 6, 1185--1196 (1996; Zbl 0869.28008)], the author proved that if \(| \Gamma_f| >0\), then \(f\) is integrable on \([0,1]\), which, by Birkhoff's Ergodic Theorem, implies that \(f\in L^1\) and that for all \(\alpha \in [0,1]\setminus \mathbb{Q}\), the limit of \(M_n^{\alpha} f(x)\) equals \(\int_0^1 f\). In the same paper, the author proved that \(\Gamma_f \setminus \mathbb{Q}\) can be dense for non-integrable functions, a result that has been improved later on by R. Svetic. In the paper under review, the author proves that there are non-\(L^1\)functions for which \(\Gamma_f\) is of Hausdorff dimension one. This answers a question raised by the author himself.
